CFESA Certification: A Guide for Foodservice Equipment Techs
CFESA, the Commercial Food Equipment Service Association, is the trade association for companies that service commercial foodservice equipment. Its technician certification program is the best-known credential in this trade.
What the program covers
CFESA testing covers the fundamentals service techs use every day: electrical, gas and steam systems, refrigeration and safety. CFESA offers an entry-level credential and higher-level Certified Technician designations, and member companies often pay for testing and study material. Check cfesa.com for the current levels, requirements and fees.
Is it worth it?
For a new tech, yes: it is a clear signal of competence. For experienced techs it can support a raise or a lead role. Many CFESA member companies prefer or reward certified techs.
Other credentials that help
- EPA Section 608 (refrigerant handling)
- Manufacturer factory training (Hobart, Rational, Manitowoc, Hoshizaki, etc.)
- State gas or refrigeration licenses where required
